Go green tips – save electricity in your home

Going green is not only ecologically beneficial – it can also benefit your bank balance as you save money on electricity bills. Save money while you save the Earth.

So, you can easily do this by using energy saving appliances in your home. As the modern world has woken up to the global trend of environmental awareness, many manufacturers have brought out “green products” that promise to have less of an impact on your energy consumption or pollution output.

Have you ever tried to make sense of your electricity bill? Good luck! The municipality has confusion down to a fine art with terminology that electrical engineers understand and a billing logic that NOBODY understands. Here are a couple of things you might see on your bill:

  • kWH or kilowatt hour
  • Watts per hour

You pay according to how much electrical energy (or Watts) you use per hour. One kWH is 1,000 Watts of energy used per hour. The less energy you use, the less you pay.

It makes sense, therefore, to use appliances and light bulbs in the house that use less energy per hour. Modern appliances and light bulbs show the kWH number, so choose those that will save energy and money.

Here are some useful tips on how to save money in your home:

  1. Buy light bulbs the smart way – get the new energy saving CFL bulbs that produce the same amount of light for much less energy consumption. These bulbs might cost slightly more BUT they last a lot longer and will save you money in the long run
  2. In Winter, put on a jersey and some socks – simple and effective but it might more sense than running that energy-expensive oil heater
  3. In Summer go naked! Well, as naked as possible – wearing fewer layers means you cool down, so you don’t have to keep the airconditioner or fan running all day and night
  4. Run after your family members and turn off the lights – or better yet make it a standard practice in your home to turn off a light when leaving a room. If nobody is in the room, why should the light be on?

I’m sure you’ve got a ton of energy-saving tips of your own – please feel free to drop a comment below with your ideas on saving money by cutting down on energy usage in your home.

These light bulbs last a lot longer then regular bulbs. Especially when used outside where it is hot in summer and cold in winter.
