Vegetable gardening in April

In the Southern Hemisphere, April is a time for colourful Autumn leaves, chilly days, Easter bunnies and of course, April Fools’ Day.

You should plant the following during April:

  • Broad beans
  • Cabbage
  • Leeks
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Peas
  • Spinach
  • Turnips

If you have a herb garden, you should plant coriander, dill, chives, marjoram, oregano and thyme.

You should dig in your spent mulches now, and remove those competitive weeds regularly. Weeds will make good compost if they haven’t seeded yet.

Winter is coming soon, so get ready by fixing up your house’s insulation, check the gas in the heater and cover up the swimming pool.
