Customers Drive For Hours to Shop At This Popular Grocery Store
There are certain fast-food menu items and grocery store products that people will do whatever they can to get their hands on (looking at you, Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, Costco, and…lots of Costco items). But there’s also a grocery store that shoppers are obsessed with, which has people driving for hours to get to… and then spending hours in the store.
The grocery store chain is located in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina, but all four stores in the Tar Heel State are north of its biggest city: Charlotte. In recent months, there’s been a huge push to bring Wegmans to the area so fans don’t have to travel hours to shop. There’s even a Facebook group called “Bring Wegmans to Charlotte, NC!” dedicated to the effort that was started four years ago. It currently has over 3,500 members.

Why are so many people itching to get a Wegmans store in Charlotte? It all has to do with customer service, the products the grocery store chain sells, of course, and their sizes. In the Facebook group, lots of fans comment about the store’s bulk section that includes baking supplies, breakfast, candy, gum, chips, snacks, cookies, dried fruits, nuts, rice, and more, usually for under $1 an ounce.
Wegmans also ranked #9 on USA Today’s list of the Best Supermarkets in the country for 2021. Consumers cast their votes for their favorites based on things like value, selection, and service.
“Each time a Wegmans opens—and there have been a lot of openings in the Northeast in recent years—it has been like the Beatles coming to town,” one of the USA Today ranking contributors, Eric Grossman, said.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the excitement will reach Charlotte just yet. A spokesperson for the company told local news station CBS17 in January that there are no plans to expand to the area, but they are aware of the fan base there.
According to the Wegmans site, however, other North Carolina locations are opening: One in Chapel Hill, one in Holly Springs, and another in Wake Forest. All of these new Wegmans locations will be around a 2+ hour drive away from Charlotte.
