Five health risks linked to eating oodles of noodles

Preparing a pack of noodles is as straightforward as 1,2,3! It’s quick, easy and relatively cheap.

But too much of anything can be a bad thing, and with noodles, this can be potentially life-threatening.

Following the death of three children from the Eastern Cape who consumed a packet of noodles over the weekend, there has been an increased interest in the potentially harmful effects of noodles, although this can in no way be linked to the Eastern Cape deaths.

FIVE DANGERS LINKED TO EATING TOO MUCH NOODLES

1. STRAIN ON YOUR LIVER AND DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Noodles are made from refined wheat which makes it difficult for the digestive system to break down.

They also contains preservatives like monosodium glutamate (MSG), which can lead to increased blood pressure, and tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), which can cause vision disturbances and behavioral changes.

This can put a stress on your liver too, which over time can become inflamed or damaged due to the build up of fat cells.

2. INCREASED HEART RISK FOR WOMEN

According to a new study by Harvard School of Public Health, women who consume instant noodles frequently were found to be more likely to develop risk factors like obesity and high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

3. IMBALANCED DIET AND WEIGHT GAIN

Noodles are processed and are high in fat, sodium and calories and low in fibre, protein and vitamins and minerals. They’re also enhanced with artificial colours, preservatives, additives and flavourings to enhance their shelf-life and taste.

When eaten in abundance, the poor diet and lack of nutritional content can lead to weight gain.

4. A RISK OF CANCER

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and t-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), two known preservatives found in instant noodles are considered carcinogenic and can cause cancer, and can even lead to asthma, anxiety and diarrhea if consumed/we are exposed to them over a long period of time.

5. TRACES OF HEAVY METAL CONTAMINANTS

According to reports, many samples of noodles have been found to contain traces of heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic, and copper.

Consuming too much of these can lead to metal poisoning, resulting in risks like organ damage and the deterioration of cognitive abilities.
