I’m A Celeb is my weight loss camp – I’m very fat and prepared for the show by eating pies, says Corrie’s Simon Gregson

CORONATION Street star Simon Gregson has said he is using the I’m A Celebrity castle as a weight loss camp – complaining: “I’m very fat.”

The Steve McDonald actor, 47, said the meagre diet of rice and beans the campmates have to live on was a “bonus”.

He dubbed the famously gruelling show ‘the worst boot camp in the world’[/caption]

Admitting he had been feasting on pies in the run-up to his appearance, he insisted: “I desperately need to lose weight.”

Speaking to The Sun from isolation before joining I’m A Celeb Simon said: “It is a bit of a hard schlep to do because of course the food isn’t great – rice and beans all the time.

“But for me it’s a bonus. I desperately need to lose weight so I’m looking at it like the worst boot camp in the world.”

Talking about the challenges facing him, Simon said: “I just hope there’s not too much physical activity stuff. I used to be very fit, now I’m just very fat.

“Hopefully I’ll bring something to the table, you never know.”

The star said he had planned to cut down his food in preparation but ended up doing the opposite.

He admitted: I’ve done two weeks of quarantine.

“I thought: ‘Right there’s some gym equipment, I shall lower my food intake, I shall do all the proper sleeping patterns that you have to do as it goes on late.

“I’ve done none of them. I’ve kind of put the whole thing to the back of my mind so far that at one point I forgot what I was doing here.

“I’ve just been eating pies and enjoying life to its full.”

He added that he would miss wife Emma Gleave and their three children – as well as trips to the pub.

The actor explained: “I’m going to miss Emma and the kids the absolute most.

“We haven’t had any contact for the last few days and me and Emma speak to each other every 10 minutes even if we’re not together. That’s going to be really hard.”

He added: “I think I’m going to miss the pub.”

And Simon, who is fascinated by the supernatural said the ghosts thought to waft about Gwrych Castle at night, will pose no problem at all.

He said: “I don’t think it would bother me. I did read up on the castle as I am interested in all things spooky.

“I believe there’s a lady in white. There’s a gardener, there’s a milkmaid and I believe there’s a poltergeist butler. They may come in handy.”

Adam and Simon will appear in the camp on Thursday night after their arrival was teased on tonight’s show.
