Matthew Perry looks unrecognizable smoking cigarettes in LA after scoring millions for book deal about his addiction

MATTHEW Perry appeared unrecognizable on Thursday as he smoked cigarettes while running errands in Los Angeles.

The Friends actor was spotted in Santa Monica just one day after it was revealed he reportedly scored millions for a book deal that will chronicle his lifelong battle with addiction.

Matthew, 52, was spotted getting out of his car in the LA beach town and kept covered up in a blue plaid flannel.

He wore a matching shirt underneath with baggy sweatpants and a cigarette in his mouth while holding a pack of more.

The TV and film star appeared somber as he headed into a building while continuing to smoke.

Yesterday, Deadline reported that the Massachusetts native will be paid millions to write a book on his life, raking in a paycheck in the mid-seven figure range.

According to the outlet, the actor “will take readers behind-the-scenes and onto the soundstage of the sitcom while opening up about his private struggles with addiction.”

The summary continued: “It is set to be a candid and self-aware book told with his trademark humor, with Perry vividly detailing his lifelong battle with the disease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.”

Flatiron Books publisher Megan Lynch said of the new memoir: “We need humor, we need catharsis, and we need to agree on something–and Matthew’s extraordinary story, told in his inimitable voice, is that thing.

“Matthew’s book has unrivaled potential to bring people together, which feels especially galvanizing right now, a time of isolation and division.”

The exciting news comes after Matthew recently split from his fiancee Molly Hurwitz.

He began dating the literary manager, 29, in 2018 and they had gotten engaged in November 2020.

However, in June, the actor confirmed to PEOPLE that they had called off their engagement.

In a statement, Matthew said of the breakup: “Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best.”

A week before their split, it was reported that Molly put their wedding on hold after he “flirted with other women” while they were on a break.

A 20-year-old recently exposed the actor for flirting with her after they matched on Raya when she was just 19 years old and he was 50.

After his dating app scandal, a source revealed to OK! magazine that Molly wanted to “take a breather”.

The news of their split came less than a week after fans expressed their concern for Matthew in May when he appeared to slur his words and nodded off while filming the reunion special.

He sat down with the beloved cast of Friends for a “three question” interview with People on Wednesday, which had the group reminisce about their years as friends and co-stars.

However, fans noticed that the Canadian actor was not responding to questions with his normal sharp wit and appeared quiet and distracted.

Several fans took to the comments section to express their concern over Matthew, who has struggled with addiction since his time on the award-winning show.

“Seeing Matthew sad is heartbreaking,” one wrote, adding: “I hope he gets better soon, I don’t know how I’m going to enjoy the reunion when Matthew is this sad.”

Despite speculation, The Sun exclusively revealed that Matthew’s slurred speech was due to emergency dental work and not a drugs relapse.

Matthew also recently dropped $6million on a mansion in Los Angeles – complete with a fitness pool – after selling his beachfront Malibu mansion for $13million.
